IPC has also warned that beta-blockers (metoprolol, propranolol and atenolol) used for various cardiac events can trigger temporary erectile dysfunction.

Commonly-used painkiller Nimesulide and antibiotic Cefuroxime can lead to serious skin disorders; Govt issues alert

The IPC has warned that beta-blockers (metoprolol, propranolol and atenolol) used for various cardiac events can trigger temporary erectile dysfunction.

IPC has flagged Cefuroxime, Dutasteride + Tamsulosin combination, Nimesulide and Beta-blockers (Metoprolol, Propranolol, Atenolol).

“Healthcare Professionals, Patients/Consumers are advised to closely monitor the possibility of the above ADRs associated with the use of the above suspected drugs. If, such reactions are encountered, please report to the NCC-PvPI, IPC…,” IPC said in a statement.

Cefuroxime is an antibiotic indicated for lower and upper respiratory tract infections, Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), gynaecological infections, skin or soft tissue infections, etc. It is also prescribed for diseases like pneumonia, meningitis, otitis media, sepsis, urinary tract infections, and Lyme disease. According to IPC, this medicine can lead to Acute Generalized Exanthematous Pustulosis (AGEP) which is a rare drug reaction characterised by superficial pustules. The condition is characterised by the rapid appearance of sterile, non-follicular, pin-head-sized pustules.

The Pharma body also flagged the Dutasteride + Tamsulosin combination, sold under the brand name Jalyn among others, which is indicated for the treatment of adult male symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia. IPC reveals that the medicine can lead to palpitation.

Nimesulide, a commonly used painkiller can cause adverse reactions, as per the IPC alert. Nimesulide is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with pain medication and fever-reducing properties. It is usually indicated for inflammatory conditions including joint disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, post traumatic and post-operative painful condition and fever.

Some of the manufacturers of Nimesulide include Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Mankind Pharma, Panacea Biotec Pharma, Ipca Laboratories etc.

IPC has alerted that the painkiller can cause Fixed Drug Eruption (FDE) which is a rare adverse drug effect on the skin leading to recurrent lesions. Antibiotics, antiepileptics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents, sildenafil, and phenothiazines are often responsible for causing FDE. Certain food products like cashews can also lead to FDE.

Meanwhile, the IPC has also warned that beta-blockers (metoprolol, propranolol and atenolol) used for various cardiac events can trigger temporary erectile dysfunction.
